Rev. Msgr. Edward M. Deliman
What first awakened in you the realization that God might be calling you to the priesthood?
I actually can’t remember when I didn’t want to be a priest. I always felt the draw to the church and the priesthood.
What were your initial excitements and hopes as you began to think more deeply about our vocation?
I entertained religious life, particularly the Passionists and made a weekend or two. My pastor insisted on St. Charles and the rest is history. I think I was very excited about beginning a journey I long thought about.
At what point in your life did you enter the seminary? (i.e. after high school/college/job experience).
I was 16 years old, after 10th grade and I have no regrets. My seminary experience was great and my 33 years of priesthood have been the happiest I could ask for.
What do you value most about your vocation to the priesthood? What has made your choice of a vocation “worth it” to you? I value my parish ministry. That’s where Diocesan Priesthood is key. I value leading people in prayer, praying with them and teaching them how to pray.
What is the most challenging part of the priesthood for you at this time?
I want to show others how wonderful the priesthood is. Many things recently have tarnished our vocation. My goal is to be even a better priest as I respond to the needs of people.
What are your hobbies?I enjoy reading and biking.
What does your “typical” day look like?
5:00 AM - rising (because I like the morning), prayer, light breakfast
6:30/8:00 AM - Mass
8:45 AM - hospital rounds
10:00 AM - school or communion calls
sometimes nursing home Mass
12 Noon - short break
afternoon (varies) - clerical work, class in school, preparation for RCIA - Adult Education Classes, preparation for evening meetings 5:15 Mass (on turn)
5:45: PM - dinner
evenings - meetings; pastoral council, finance council, adult education, etc.
What would you say, from your own experience, is the most compelling reason that a young man should consider a vocation the priesthood?
If a young man wants to be challenged, this is the priesthood. To live a Gospel Life in an age that challenges our values is a witness to the world.
